With Maria Anwander (AT)

Curated by Clemens Mair (AT) & Karin Oberhuber (AT)

In her works, Maria Anwander often takes a feminist view of art history, investigating its protagonists and the unequal distribution of attention, success and fame. For centuries men have dominated the art world and its perception, while female artists feature only rarely or as minor figures. A fact that persists to this day – with female artists still underrepresented in major museums and exhibitions. Exhibition activities and the art market are still defined by male actors resolutely defending their province.

This is the starting point for Anwander’s work, commenting ironically on the art industry, above all with regard to the situation of her female colleagues. Unashamedly, she adapts the legacy of world-famous artists so as to place it in a new, feminist context. Not without humour, she thus intervenes in art history, eliminating virile aspects in order to make room for a future generation of female artists.
